A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon passes between the Earth and the Sun, blocking out the Sun’s light for around 7 minutes at totality. This design shows the sequence of different phases we see during an eclipse, including the ‘diamond ring effect’ in the centre. This happens when the Moon is almost completely obscuring the Sun, and only a small amount of light can shine through one of the Moon’s craters.
